Bev and Dave Stegeman

My first gardening adventure was at about the age of 8, when I dug about a one foot square hole in the back yard and filled it with hundreds of silver maple seeds (helicopters). This was so successful that I was "hooked". For many years I grew annuals and vegetables, but about 8 years ago I heard Olga Petryszyn speak about her hybridizing adventures at a local garden club meeting, and my interest was really piqued! Dave and I attended our first National Convention in '97 in Indianapolis, and at the cut leaf show Dave became excited about hostas as well. In the winter of '96-'97 we grew our first hosta seeds and haven't stopped since. We have met the other "Seedy Fellows" over the years at various hosta functions and have become fast friends. With retirement time approaching for us, we hope to have more time to spend in the garden - just hope we don't run out of room! -Bev Stegeman

Mom is a very large blue seedling we got from Olga Petryszyn that we call 'Space Station'(NR). She is a cross between 'Dorothy Benedict' and montana macrophylla. Dad is unknown, but we suspect he is 'Blue Vision', who grows just in front of Mom in our garden. At five years old, 'Skylight' was 36" wide and 12" high in our garden in northwest Indiana. The glaucous, turquoise-blue leaves are flat, of heavy substance, and about 9-1/2" long by 8" wide. The plant blooms here from late June into mid-July and is very fertile.
